Rhode Island Fishing Report
The Frances Fleet in Point Judith has been running trips for cod whenever the weather cooperates. The fishing has been a bit more difficult than it was earlier in the season, but the bite has remained solid. Both jigs and bait have been producing some nice cod catches, and weights have varied as they’ve been both drifting and anchoring at times. Following a quick arctic blast this weekend, we will be getting right back to the continued mild winter, so there should be some opportunities to sail next week. Ralph, at Crafty One Customs reopened on February 1st and the shop will be open from 9-6 Wednesday through Friday, and 9-3 on Saturdays. The continued open water has provided some good largemouth action for anglers pitching jigs and crankbaits. It has also brought more interest to the salmon fishery throughout the state, with good reports coming in from Melville, among others. Saltwater reports have been quiet, but with another warm-up coming next week, we may see some more cod and/or holdover bass interest.
Elisa, from Snug Harbor Marina reports that anglers are still looking for holdover striped bass on the warmer days, but the bite has remained a bit slower than in years past. A few decent fish are being picked up here and there, but you have to work for them. The cod bite has slowed down a bit, but when the headboats get a decent day to run, they are finding some nice fish.
Dustin, at RI Kayak Fishing Adventures, has continued to take advantage of freshwater opportunities, thanks to the continued mild winter. The trout and Sebago salmon bite has remained steady, and the flows are clean and clear in most of the streams Fly, lure, and bait presentation have all been getting the job done, and you can use the water conditions to dictate your approach/presentation. Largemouth have become a bit more lethargic, but slowly presented baits and jigs have been getting the job done. Holdover striped bass anglers are still reporting a slower bite than previous years, but enough action in the usual spots to keep you busy until Spring arrives. This weekend looks like a tough one to be on the water, but plenty of opportunities straight ahead, with another warm week coming next week. The bite has been a bit slower than earlier in the winter, but there are still plenty of fish being caught. Holdover striped bass fishing has picked up a bit and will also be a strong option next week. Recent trout and Sebago Salmon stockings have produced good catches for anglers working the rivers and streams. Some of the smaller ponds may skim over this weekend, but most should stay open and will continue to provide a strong largemouth bass, pickerel, and panfish bite.
