Long Island – New York Fishing Report – July 26, 2018

Inshore the fluke, seabass, and porgies should pick up after the rain lets up on Friday. Montauk will remain Striped bass anglers' best bet for the weekend.

The bad weather this past week kept many anglers at home, making it tough to put much of a report together for this week. For the anglers that did make it out many of them were rewarded with nice catches. The good news is the weekend looks to be bringing much better weather allowing everyone from the surf angler to the guys heading off shore to get back into the action. Here is what the local shops had to say this week.

Long Island Fishing Report

John at Hudson Park Bait and Tackle reports, things were slow around the shop this week with many anglers not heading out because of the weather. He did however say, the porgy bite is still good and the fluke has been OK. The striped bass action has slowed down and it seems that the blues even though they were recently heavy in the area have disappeared. Hopefully with the weather getting better the action of both these species will pick back up.

East Coast Fishing in Little Neck reports, your best bet for the weekend is to head after some porgies. This action seems to be best as of late with fluke fishing being very slow. They are still hearing reports of keeper striped bass being taken at night in the area on live eels.

Capitol Tackle in Manhattan reports, the porgy action is still going strong out on the shops party boat the Capitol Princess. They have been at the dock the last few days because of the weather, but they will be back out this weekend and should be getting back right back into the same action they were into before the bad weather. They have also heard of a decent fluke bite in New Jersey and off of Brooklyn.

River Bay Outfitters reports, that on a trip run by the shop up to the Housatonic River this past Monday. Though the weather was crazy to say the least for the day, the small mouth bass fishing Paul said was outstanding. A new comer to fly fishing named Bill had two nice small mouth bass with one weighing close to 5lbs. Locally a regular customer named big Kevin has been fishing a Tenkara fly fishing set up and has been doing very well in the local streams. Again, due to the heat your best bet is to fish earlier in the morning or in the evening.

Bay Park Fishing Station in Oceanside reports, last Friday Anthony and Liz fishing on the boat Deluxe got into some nice fluke. They fished the AB Bridge, Anthony and Liz angled a 7.50 lb fluke, along with another 4.80 lber, the crew caught the fluke in about 30 ft of water using 6″ Gulp grubs.

White Water Outfitters reports, there is still a great striped bass bite going on in Montauk. Locally there still have been some striped bass but, they have been smaller then what has being caught out east. Also in the bay and the ocean closer to home the fluke fishing has been very good. Seabass fishing has been good on different structure in about 110 feet of water. Offshore before the blow the tuna bite was as good as it has ever been. Many anglers have been in the shop this week to stock up to hopefully get out this weekend.

Gone Fishing Marine in Montauk reports, that most of this week was a bummer due to the bad weather and big seas. They did have one boat head out early on Tuesday to fish the 6-8ft seas off of Montauk Point. Though the seas were big they were rewarded with a boat limit and the biggest fish being 41lbs. Today they had a boat head out for fluke and in an hour a half they limited out with the biggest fish weighing 6.1lbs.

Rick from Harbor Marina of East Hampton reports, local sharpies are picking away at fluke through out the Gardiners Bay Area. SeaBass are holding up along the rocky bottom sections East of Gardiners island. The “Andiamo” out of Harbor Marina, has been connecting with keeper striped bass along the Fishers Island Chain. Low light periods of the day and night time are offering the best opportunites for keeper sized fish. Reports of big-eye tuna from the eastern canyons and bluefin along the 30 fathom line, have the off shore crews read to roll once, the unstable weather breaks later this week. This is a great time of year to plan that annual off-shore trip or trip out to Block Island.

Miller Place Bait and Tackle reports, they have heard of keeper fluke being taken around buoy 11. Things have been pretty quiet besides that, but the good news is many anglers headed out today. So if you want an up to date report make sure to give the shop a call to see what happen today.

Fishing Forecast for Long Island

Friday looks like it will be a wash out, but the rest of the weekend looks like it will be good enough to get back out on the water. Inshore the fluke, seabass, and of course porgies should pick back up. For striped bass for both boat and surf anglers Montauk will remain your best bet to the weekend. With the full moon being on Friday, Saturday and Sunday should be very good both in the surf and in the deeper rips. From talking to the shops if you are looking to head offshore Sunday might be your best bet. Fishing offshore was amazing before this weather and many anglers think it will be great again once you are finally able to get back out there.
