Oswego County
Oswego River report
The water flow has been very steady over the last few days running right around 10,000cfs. Anglers have been finding some steelhead and brown trout from shore and by driftboat. Another round of lake effect snow is moving in tonight through Thursday but conditions will improve with little precipitation and warmer temperatures for the weekend.
The bridge to Leto Island is closed, and there are Mandatory Personal Flotation Device (PFD) zones on the Oswego River below the Varick Dam. For more information, view the Oswego County Tourism website at www.visitoswegocounty.com and look for fishing reports along the top bar on the home page.
Salmon River report:
According to the Douglaston Salmon Run, we had difficult conditions on Sunday with snow throughout the day. Of the dozen or so anglers that fished the run, most left by early afternoon and the consistent report was “no action.” Three anglers fished until late afternoon and between them they were able to bring about a half dozen fish to hand. All were drift fisherman, two pin fishing and one float/spin fishing. Two anglers fished Monday and reported getting into a few steelies and one nice brown 15+ pounds. The water flow is running at 1200cfs through midnight tonight.
According to Whitaker’s Sport Shop & Motel, the anglers we spoke with yesterday who fished the upper end of the river between Altmar and Pineville reported hooking into a few fish but overall had a slow day.
Oneida Lake report:
We have had a good amount of snow over the last few days and more lake effect is in the forecast from this evening through tomorrow night. Temperatures will also be warming to near 40 degrees for the weekend and into early next week. Any ice formation is likely not safe at this time.
Sandy Pond report:
Anglers were out on the pond over the weekend. We do have another blast of lake effect snow in the forecast from tonight through tomorrow. Along with that temperatures are expected to warm up to near 40 degrees for the weekend and into early next week. We will have to see how this impacts the ice conditions.
Orleans County
As quickly as the ice starts forming the temperature rises above freezing and then it’s gone again.
The only good news is that we are just that much closer to spring and the start of lake fishing season.
On the tributaries within Orleans County, all are open with the smaller ones having just a bit of shore ice and slush.
On the “Oak” steelhead are still being taken with some larger ones caught right at the dam.
The smaller tributaries are still offering some good fishing opportunities with moderate water flow and around 2 feet of visibility.
The only ice fishing reports that I have heard of in our area are on the ponds close to Lake Ontario in Greece but I wouldn’t count on that for too long.
Reports I have gotten is that the Perch fishing hasn’t been bad on those ponds.
This weekend I will be in Monroeville, Pa. for the Allegheny Sport, Travel and Outdoor Show so stop by and chat for a while.
From Point Breeze on Lake Ontario, the World Fishing Network’s Ultimate Fishing Town USA and the rest of Orleans County, Let’s make everyday a great fishing day right here in Orleans County.
