Captain Tags 60,000 Fish

In July 2014, Captain Al Anderson of Rhode Island reached an incredible milestone when he tagged and released his 60,000th gamefish, a striped bass measuring 25 inches and weighing nearly 6 pounds. Capt. Al Anderson has been marking gamefish for science for 50 years, and has tagged school and giant bluefin tuna, a variety of sharks, white and blue marlin, along with other inshore-favored species like striped bass and bluefish.
Anderson, who recently retired from charter fishing, credits his long-term clients with offering some of their catch up for tagging. Now he’s “marking gamefish for science” from his 17-foot Boston Whaler. He is the first New England charter fishing skipper to be inducted into the International Game Fish Association’s Hall of Fame.

The On The Water staff is made up of experienced anglers from across the Northeast who fish local waters year-round. The team brings firsthand, on-the-water experience and regional knowledge to coverage of Northeast fisheries, techniques, seasonal patterns, regulations, and conservation.

How many tags have been retrieved? What program is analyzing the data and how can others get involved? Thanks.
